The trial of a man accused of killing former postmistress Una Crown in her Wisbech bungalow 12 years ago is due to start next week.
David Newton, 70, of Magazine Close, Wisbech is due to appear at Cambridge Crown on January 13 – ironically that is also the 12th anniversary of the discovery of Mrs Crown’s body at her home also in Magazine Lane.
Mrs Crown, who was 86, was discovered in a pool of her blood, her body had been set on fire where she lay in the entrance hall of the bungalow.
On Thursday, May 23, 2024, Newton appeared at Cambridge Crown Court and pleaded not guilty to murder. He was remanded in custody.
Initially, Mrs Crown’s death was treated as an accident but following a post-mortem which showed she had suffered stab wounds to her neck and chest, a murder investigation was launched.
Mrs Crown had not been seen alive since Friday, January 11, two days before her body was discovered when she was caught on CCTV leaving Tesco in Wisbech.
Mrs Crown had spoken to a friend over the phone at about 5pm on the evening before she was discovered dead.
It is expected the trial will last four weeks,
