Glasgow Warriors scrum-half George Horne bagged himself one of the tries of the season with a fine piece of skill to touch down in the Champions Cup.

Try-of-the-season contenders are often sensational passages of play, involving countless offloading and side-stepping, or a length-of- the-field solo effort. Despite the fact this one is objectively simplistic, the margin for error was so small it is genuinely amazing that Horne managed to pull it off.

The moment takes place in Glasgow over the weekend, with Warriors facing Sale Sharks in a European clash. With 12 minutes played, the home side were seven points ahead and looking to extend their lead.

Step forward George Horne.

The 5ft 9in scrum-half finds himself charging down the right flank, being targeted for a big hit into touch. Aware of the incoming hooker Tadgh McElroy and winger Aaron Reed, Horne uses quick-thinking to stick a smart grubber towards the line.

Somehow, he manages to to keep his feet away from the paint with ball in hand, stepping into touch as the ball leaves his foot, in a straight footrace for the line. He gets himself back into play to re-gather and put down the ball just millimetres away from the in-goal touchline.

Commentator Rory Hamilton was blown away by the effort, while the TMO played the slow-motion footage to confirm the score: “Oh, has he?! Has he?! That is sensational from George Horne! A moment of individual magic from the scrum-half.”

The United Rugby Championship winners won the game convincingly in a 38-19 score line in the end. This week, they have the tough task of facing Dan Biggar’s Toulon away from home.
