Weather maps show where in Wales will see the strongest winds on Wednesday, after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning covering a large part of Wales. The warning has been in place since 3pm on Tuesday, December 17, and has been extended to 9am on Wednesday.
The full warning reads: “Southwesterly winds will strengthen through the latter part of Tuesday night with gales developing across northern and western Wales, then across parts of northwest England during the morning travel period. Gusts of 45-55 mph are expected fairly widely but gusts of 65 mph are possible in a few places, particularly along the coast. Winds will ease through the rest of Wednesday morning.”
The new warning comes less than a fortnight after Storm Darragh caused chaos across Wales. The storm saw a rare red danger to life warning issued, as gusts of over 93mph battered the country. Wales was the region worst affected by the storm, with hundreds of trees falling and the roofs of some buildings collapsing. A major incident was issued by one police force asking people not to travel.

According to maps, north Wales and the entirety of the west coast of the country are going to be hardest hit by the strong gales, although inland wind speeds will also be fairly high. As well as the wind, the forecaster said that outbreaks of rain will move east, and after a mild start, it will gradually turn colder in the north through the day.
Currently as of 7am, gusts of around 58mph and 61mph are expected around Caernarfon and Wrexham respectively. Further south, coastal areas of Aberystwyth and Pembroke could see winds of around 53mph and 48 mph.
By 8am, the strongest of winds appear to be moving eastbound, with Newtown and Hereford seeing 52mph and 47mph gales. While the warning doesn’t cover Cardiff, the winds in the capital will also reach a fairly high 45mph. As the winds continue to move east, parts of England such as Manchester and Birmingham will see wind speeds creep up.
While the warning comes to an end at 9am, there will still be high winds across the country throughout Wednesday. As of 9am, gales across the west coast are expected to drop into the 30mphs, whereas more eastern areas such as Wrexham and Newtown will still remain around 50mph. The Met Office said the warning was extended from 8am finish to 9am to account for higher winds as the storm moves west into northern England.
