Villages’ toilets with ‘hundreds’ of visitors saved from closure

Two north Pembrokeshire public toilets have been saved from closure because of the call for their facilities.

The local loos in Moylgrove and Nevern were amongst those earmarked for the axe by Pembrokeshire County Council, which announced it would be shutting a number of conveniences for financial reasons.

They gave notice that, unless the community council could take them over, it would close the facilities, which are in the car park in Moylgrove, and behind the village hall in Nevern.

But Nevern Community Council stepped up to the mark to champion the wishes of locals.

“We consulted locally and the response was overwhelming,” said Cllr. Kath Whitehead of Nevern Community Council.

“Residents told us we must keep the toilets open. We installed counters and found that there were hundreds of users every year, including quite a lot in winter.

“They’re essential not just for visitors, but for local walkers as well.”

The new year began on a celebratory note for the community, with the handover of the toilets completed on Thursday, January 2.

The toilets will be cleaned and maintained by people directly contracted by the community council, in place of national contractors Danfo.
