Wales is leading the UK in early detection of liver disease.
Research published in the British Journal of General Practice shows Wales has 100 per cent care pathways for liver disease across all health boards, compared to 36 per cent across the rest of the UK.
The British Liver Trust said: “Work in Wales serves as an excellent example for the rest of the UK on how to tackle the growing challenge of liver disease in the UK.”
The research highlights proactive recognition of alcohol consumption and diabetes as risk factors by healthcare professionals in Wales.
Dr Helen Jarvis, clinical advisor for the British Liver Trust, said: “Everyone with liver disease, or at risk of developing it, should have access to essential medical care and advice, no matter where they live in the UK.”
The UK saw a 27 per cent increase in deaths from liver disease between 2019 and 2023, despite 90 per cent of liver disease being preventable.
