Welsh town hall to be converted into housing

Carmarthenshire County Council is moving forward with plans to convert its town hall into housing. Planning is now underway to ascertain whether a scheme to build eight brand new homes in Ammanford Town Hall will be feasible.

While it is awaiting planning approval, the Ammanford Town hall building will be transformed into a mixture of 1, 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes. The ‘modern houses’ are going to be built to high energy efficient standards and retain the town hall’s character, features and appearance, which the council says is a priority for them.

Councillor Linda Evans, the deputy leader of Carmarthenshire County Council, said: “There is a significant demand for housing in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire and across Wales. The opportunity to develop the whole of Ammanford Town Hall for the purpose of providing eight, modern and energy-efficient new homes for local people in housing need is one we must grasp with both hands.”

The plans include the relocation of the town council’s office to a more suitable accommodation. This would be at the Amman Centre, Margaret Street, which is a short walk from the council’s current location at the Town Hall.

Councillor Linda Evans said: “These provisional plans will retain the character, features and appearance of the existing Town Hall building whilst supporting the regeneration of Ammanford – due to the Town Hall’s close proximity to the Town Centre and facilities.”

The members of the Ammanford Town Council have been a part of the discussions regarding these proposals with the Carmarthenshire County Council. Councillor Linda Evans said: “We are glad to also offer better alternative options for the town council to locate their offices and keep the building within the County Council’s control and prevent it from falling into disrepair. This proposed development will make the best use of a key building within the Ammanford landscape and will ensure that it is refurbished to a high standard and ensure its future for years to come.”
