Former Welsh rugby star Gareth Bowen was in tears after his son made his debut for Cardiff Rugby.
Tom Bowen put in a memorable performance on the wing for Matt Sherratt’s side as they defeated Toyota Cheetahs 26-10 at the Arms Park in the capital.
The teenager has been impressing for Cardiff in Super Rygbi Cymru, stealing the show on the opening weekend in September and regularly getting himself on the scoresheet. He’s now transferred his form to the Challenge Cup, with a fine try and another important break to help create a try for Wales wing.

After the game, Bowen was joined by his father, former Scarlets and Bristol star Gareth. The pair shared a lovely moment as Gareth embraced his son, reducing him to tears.
Speaking with Caitlin Bryant at full time, Bowen was asked about what it was like to run out for the Welsh region for the first time.
“It’s just felt weird to be honest!” explained 18-year-old Bowen. “Playing with these boys… last year I was watching them play against Bath and I just dreamt of it, so it’s a dream come true really.”
Bowen was then asked how he approached the game, given the fact he put in such a good performance. “It’s just like any other game I suppose,” he continued. “I didn’t worry too much, I had two British and Irish Lions out with me. I just took it all in really and I loved it out there.”
Dad Gareth posted on social media after the game: “Incredibly proud family tonight, only wish that his grandad was here to witness it, no doubt he’s looking down with a Guinness in hand and cheering him on.”
Wales international Lee Jarvis also compared the young talent to the legendary Shane Williams.
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Liam Belcher should be in the Welsh squad,” he said. “And I’d give Tom Bowen a go as well. Reminds me of Shane.”
Cardiff have handed two debuts to very promising youngsters in recent weeks, with Steffan Emanuel having his first run-out in last week’s defeat to Lyon.
During his time with Cardiff RFC in Super Rygbi Cymru, Bowen notched up an impressive seven tries in seven games, earning his call-up to the professional game.
