This season’s north London derbies have taken on a new look after a Premier League and referees’ decision.

No matter home or away, both Arsenal and Tottenham would line up in their traditional red and white kits. But not this season.

For the first time in Premier League history, the Gunners were forced to wear their away kit in the derby at Spurs earlier this season.

And Spurs were being made to do the same for tonight’s game at Arsenal.

Why Tottenham are wearing their away kit vs Arsenal?

Earlier this season, Arsenal were banned from wearing their traditional red home kit in the north London derby away at Tottenham.

The Premier League and referee body PGMOL have decided that the kit included too much white, both on the back of the top and on the shorts, which would create a clash with Spurs’ white home kit and thus make the referees’ job harder.

Arsenal were reportedly made aware of this possibility when designing their kit for the season. The offer of wearing red kits was turned down and they duly played in their black away kit in a 1-0 win.

As part of the decision, Tottenham agreed to not wear their white kit when they visited the Emirates Stadium in tonight’s reverse fixture.
