Newport has been ranked in the top 20 most eco-friendly places in the UK.
The city, which came in at 13th place, was assessed alongside others from across the UK based on a variety of environmental practices.
This included sustainability measures, the availability of parks and green spaces, public transport options, and support for local food production.
The city’s commitment to sustainability practices was noted, which include its numerous green spaces and wildlife welfare initiatives.
Local groups, such as the Gwent Wildlife Trust and Newport City Council, work together to enhance the region’s biodiversity, ensuring outdoor locations are more accessible for residents and visitors.
Newport’s innovative approach to waste management also contributed to its high ranking.
In 2021, the city became the first in Wales to introduce refuse collection vehicles with reduced emissions, a practice still in use today.
Newport City Council’s pledge to become carbon-neutral by 2030 was another key factor.
The council has already installed solar panels on the roofs of 27 different buildings, including Wales’ largest solar panel rooftop installation.
The council is also actively collaborating with businesses to boost the energy efficiency of public sector facilities, such as the Riverfront Theatre and Regional Pool and Tennis Centre.
The city’s air quality and pollution levels were also part of the criteria used for ranking, as well as the encouragement of residents to support local, eco-conscious businesses to reduce carbon footprints.
