The tree is up and everything is ready for Christmas, now all you need is the best wine to go with thee biggest meal of the year. A wine expert has named the three wines he definitely won’t be serving.
Tom Gilbey said there are three bottles going straight in the bin before he starts to carve his turkey. The connossieur, who worked for some of the big wine importers before co-founding his own business, is known for his expert reviews and loyal instagram and TikTok following.

Tom doesn’t name producers but even those of us whose expertise starts and ends with a wander down the supermarket aisles to see what’s on offer will recognise the three wines on his naughty list. One is white, one is red and one is bubbly.
First up Tom taste tests a cava, with the label hidden. He admits he’s not a fan of the Spanish sparkle.
“I’m not calling out any individual producers but cava, that’s just a bit dull for me – cava, you’re out for Christmas,” the expert says as he vaults the bottle in the bin.
Next he tastes a New Zealand sauvignon, which he says has plenty of mango and passion fruit. But that’s just not what Tom advises to go with your Christmas dinner, infact it’s a real turkey.
“Mass produced Kiwi sauvignon, there it goes, have a little smell – that’s mango and passion fruit-tastic. But I want wine with my Christmas dinner, not alcoholic fruit juice.”
Finally Tom takes a swig of “big, ballsy” Malbec declaring it’s an “absolute powerhouse. So good, so far, but not quite.
The tipple tester says this is such a big character your turkey will be over powered. Not what you want at the Christmas dinner table.
Looking at the Malbec bottle Tom declares: “You’re going to massacre my Christmas dinner and I want something that’s going to complement my turkey, not clobber it.”
So that’s another one for the bin. Bah humbug.
