Wine expert shares tip for keeping the fizz in unfinished bottles of Christmas bubbly

A wine expert has shared his top tip on how to stop any left over bubbly going flat over Christmas. Tom Gilbey revealed his secret weapon – and it’s not sticking a spoon upside down in the bottle neck of your fizz.

Tom says the silver spoon trick falls flat. If you want your Christmas to go with a pop, you’ll need something more to keep the gas in the bottle.

It might be unlikely there’ll be any leftovers in bottles on Christmas Day, but no one wants the festivities to fall flat if there is. No one wants to throw away any Bucks Fizz, champagne, cava, Prosecco or sparkling wine that hasn’t been finished. Sign up to our food and drink newsletter here

Tom, who has a loyal following on Instagram and TikTok shared his tip with his followers. The connoisseur said a proper champagne bottle stopper is the only thing and said the silver spoon trick is for “d**** heads”.

A proper stopper , costing from around a tenner upwards, will keep the bubbles in for days, Tom reckons. But he admits only an “emergency” would usually stop him polishing off a bottle of fizz before this was needed.

Tom tried a champagne stopper on a £36 bottle of Camel Valley Rose left unfinished in the fridge for two days after an “emergency” then tested it for bubbles. And the result? – “little bubbles, plenty of fizz, absolutely b***** delicious”, declared Tom.

So there you have it. You might not have any left over fizz or even a silver spoon, but you never know and no one wants to drink flat wine. Join our WhatsApp news community here for the latest breaking news.
