Woman breaks record for most laps around Pembrokeshire reservoir in one day

A woman has broken the record for running the most laps around a popular Pembrokeshire reservoir in one day.

Kara Ellard completed 12 laps around Llys Y Fran, beating the previous record of 10 laps set by Katie Harower.

She covered 75 miles in total and over 9000ft of total elevation gain.

“Seeing friends and family supporting me on the day felt amazing. WhatsApp messages and friends turning up to join in and run kept the spirits really high.

“I am still processing it all which is strange. My body is tired and my brain even more so. Finishing that 12th loop was painfully blissful and having to round up the miles right at the end to get to 75 miles might seem a little crazy.

“But doing the rounding up twice is total madness and I did this because my watch went flat. I crossed that finish line and that is when I knew that all that work, all that sacrifice and all that planning had paid off. I had only gone and done it.”

She continued: “Often people believe a challenge like this is purely physical and the reality is, it is not.

“The mind is such a powerful tool that once you believe something is possible, that goal can become a reality. Having the right people around you and supporting you with your goals is honestly priceless.

“I suggested this. Not sure when, and not sure why, to my friend Callum who loves a challenge. When he agreed it was on, we began planning and training before choosing a date.”

Furthermore, when Callum was approached for the challenge, he was preparing for the 100-mile Pembrokeshire Coastal Path ultramarathon.

Callum said: “Llys-Y-Fran dam lap extravaganza! I’ve always been driven to go further, go faster and be the best I can be.

“I flippantly said ‘yeah, why not’, not quite realising the elevation and the slip and slide it was going to be, lap after lap after lap!

“Unfortunately, I only managed 11 out of 12 laps as my feet, hips, knees and temperature drop was feeling bad! Kara managed the full 12! She really is something else! Who needs enemies when you’ve got friends that come up with ideas as bad as this.”
